The Center for Health, Environment and Justice (CHEJ)
Was founded in 1981 as the Citizens Clearinghouse for Hazardous Waste by Lois Gibbs, community leader at Love Canal. CHEJ (http://www.chej.org) believes in environmental justice, the principle that people have the right to a clean and healthy environment regardless of their race or economic standing.
Center for Marine Conservation (CMC)
Through science-based advocacy, research and public education, CMC (www.cmc-ocean.org) promotes informed citizen participation to reverse the degradation of our oceans. The annual International Coastal Clean-up is one of their big activities.
Center for Plant Conservation (CPC)
The mission of the CPC (www.mobot.org/CPC/) is to conserve and restore the rare native plants of the United States. This site has information on endangered plants and why plants need our help.
Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage
(http://www.chimfunshi.org.za). Located in central Zambia, this is a non-profit refuge that cares for a wide variety of sick, wounded or unwanted animals -- but the primary residents are approximately 75 orphaned chimpanzees.

Conservation International
(www.conservation.org). Focuses on trying to preserve and promote awareness about the world's most endangered biodiversity through scientific programs, local awareness campaigns, examples of best practices, and economic initiatives. This site includes video.
Cultural Survival (CS)
Sponsors basic research on indigenous peoples--who they are, where they are, what problems they face, and what solutions have been developed for them. The results of this research are published in the Cultural Survival Quarterlyand in the organization's monograph series. CS (www.cs.org) also sponsors an Education Program, which seeks to inform students and the public at large about indigenous issues and their significance for us all.
Earth Island Institute
(www.earthisland.org). Earth Island's Project Network consists of more than 30 projects worldwide. Education and activist campaigns address pressing social and environmental issues: protecting rainforests, marine mammals, sea turtles, and indigenous lands; promoting organic and sustainable agriculture, ecological paper alternatives, and the emerging Russian environmental movement; and pursuing community-based habitat restoration, reduction of marine pollution, and development of urban multicultural environmental leadership.

The Globe Programme

International Alliance for Sustainable Agriculture

International Primate Protection League (IPPL)
In countries where primates live, IPPL (http://www.ippl.org) works to create and preserve national parks and sanctuaries, and for the strict control of primate hunting, trapping, and sale. IPPL's educational efforts have contributed to decisions by many countries to ban or restrict primate trade and to establish programs to protect primate habitat.
IUCN Forest Conservation Programme

The World Conservation Union was founded in 1948 and brings together 78 states, 112 government agencies, 735 NGOs, 35 affiliates, and some 10,000 scientists and experts from 181 countries in a unique worldwide partnership. Rainforest Action Network
(http://www.ran.org). Strives to protect the Earth's rainforests and support the rights of their inhabitants through education, grassroots organizing, and non-violent direct action. The site includes a page for kids.
Rainforest Alliance
(http://www.rainforest-alliance.org/). An international organization dedicated to the conservation of tropical forests for the benefit of the global community. It seeks to develop and promote economically viable and socially desirable alternatives to the destruction of this endangered, biologically diverse natural resource.
Resurgence Magazine

Sea Shepherd Conservation Society

Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute
(http://www.stri.org). A unit of the Smithsonian Institution with headquarters in Panama. It does basic research on the ecology, behavior and evolution of tropical organisms.
Student Conservation Association (SCA)
A U.S. provider of national and community conservation service opportunities, outdoor education, and career training for youth. SCA (http://www.sca-inc.org) volunteers and interns annually perform more than one million hours of conservation service in national parks, forests, refuges, and urban areas in all 50 states.
Sustainable Development Institute
(http://www.susdev.org). Seeks to heighten the environmental quality of economic development efforts through improvements in policy and practice. Its geographical concentration is on tropical forest regions and the Atlantic coast of Canada, the United States, and the eastern Caribbean. It specializes in environmental communication.
Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS)
An organization of citizens and scientists working for environmental solutions. UCS (http://www.ucsusa.org) is particularly known for its work on nuclear issues. The site includes the Great Green Web Game which is based on an analysis of the environmental impact of consumer decisions -- and through a series of questions calculates how your personal life-style choices measure up.
